About Us
El Puente – Enlace Latino de Acción Climático is a program in Puerto Rico of El Puente of Williamsburg, who is a non-profit organization that has been fighting for peace and justice since 1982. Our vision is to link communities, groups and individual leaders trained to face climate change, promoting security, integral health and the cultural values of self-determination, sustainability, social justice and peace. It is done by the areas of education, community outreach, environmental public policy and mobilization. We work creatively and collectively under an ethic of respect, horizontality, inclusiveness and community self-management, valuing diversity and the integration of multiple knowledges. We recognize the global impact of the climate crisis, as well as the political, economic and cultural relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States, require initiatives that promote dialogue and social transformation in a spirit of solidarity and collaboration among groups and individuals in and outside Puerto Rico. Since the beginning, the organization has had a broad Advisory Council that includes people dedicated to different areas of social work such as education, science, arts, community development and activism, among others.
Our objectives with the Puerto Rican Emergency Response Archive are to document our history and contribute to the creation of a repository of information that contributes to the understanding of the climate crisis in Puerto Rico and the efforts being made to address it. For example, from the Climate Education Program we design and facilitate educational experiences for young people that contribute to strengthening their knowledge and capacities to understand and face the climate crisis and encourage their participation in mobilization activities. From the Energy Oasis Program, we seek to strengthen the capacity of communities to respond to emergencies and climate disasters in the future, through the installation of energy infrastructure, training and climate action. We also analyze environmental public policies and organize spaces for meetings between organizations and individuals, such as our annual Puerto Rico Climate Change Walk, to advance climate justice and just transitions.
