In 2012, the Northeast Coast Collaborative Project began an environmental education project in collaboration with the Inter-American University, Fajardo Campus, the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao, and other stakeholder groups in the region. The project focuses on promoting community development and the conservation of the marine resources of the Reserva Natural Arrecifes La Cordillera through various educational efforts. As part of this process, work began on a Research and Social Action project in the Community of Maternillo with the collaboration of various groups of students from the INAS Program of the UPR of Humacao and the community of Matarnillo. In its second phase, the Center for Landscape Conservation joined the project contributing to the coordination, concept and implementation of the project. The effort aims to promote reflection and exchange between different sectors regarding the status of fishing in the region, community self-management, conservation of marine resources and environmental education. Through the development of a popular fishing museum, the project seeks to unite the academic sector with the community to promote community ecotourism, environmental education and sustainable development. The project is explained in detail below.
